The earlier literature is reviewed by Blom. 26 Muscle spindles have been identified in the human tongue by Cooper 47 and by Walker and Rajagopal, 213 as well as in the tongue of other primates.
The ansa cervicalis nerve (AC) innervates the infrahyoid muscles of the neck. It is formed by the junction of two main nerve roots derived entirely from ventral cervical rami [4]. At the point of their anastomosis, a loop or summit of the ansa is located in front of the internal jugular vein and the common carotid artery at the level where the

The ansa cervicalis (or ansa hypoglossi, an archaic synonym) is a component of the cervical plexus which gives muscular branches to the geniohyoid muscle of the suprahyoid group and most of the infrahyoid (strap) muscles (excluding the thyrohyoid muscle). It lies within the carotid triangle, superficial to the carotid sheath.

The ansa cervicalis (ansa hypoglossi) is a loop formed by fibers of the first three (or the second and third) cervical nerves.
It presents a superior root (the so-called descending branch of the hypoglossal nerve), which connects it with the hypoglossal nerve, but which consists of fibers from the second or first cervical nerve, and an inferior root (nervus descendens cervicalis), which connects it with branches from the second and third cervical nerves. The hypoglossal nerve is the twelfth cranial nerve, and innervates all the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue, except for the palatoglossus which is innervated by the vagus nerve. It is a nerve with a solely motor function. The nerve arises from the hypoglossal nucleus in the medulla as a number of small rootlets, passes through the hypoglossal canal and down through the neck, and eventually passes up again over the tongue muscles it supplies into the tongue. The nerve is involved in The ansa cervicalis (or ansa hypoglossi, an archaic synonym) is a component of the cervical plexus which gives muscular branches to the geniohyoid muscle of the suprahyoid group and most of the infrahyoid (strap) muscles (excluding the thyrohyoid muscle).
